Conservatory of Music - Instructor Policies

Code of Conduct

The Second Baptist Church Conservatory of Music was established and is operated to provide quality musical education in a Christian and professional environment for the people of our church and surrounding community. Accepting a position as an instructor in the Conservatory of Music automatically implies agreement to abide by the policies of the Conservatory. A Christian and professional environment requires that instructors present and support Christian and professional examples of dress, behavior, and citizenship. All instructors are asked to behave in such a way that protects our Conservatory from unfavorable comments or questions by either parents, staff members, or the community at large. All instructors, both male and female, will be expected to abide by the following dress code:

  • No shorts may be worn to teach in any capacity in the Conservatory of Music.
  • No mini-skirts may be worn to teach in any capacity. Any skirt that is shorter than four inches above the knee is considered by our Conservatory to be a mini-skirt.
  • No midriff tops (tops that bare the skin above the waistline) may be worn.
  • No T-shirts with prints that advertise alcoholic beverages, rock/rap groups, or any suggestive matter may be worn.
  • All members will be expected to dress in a manner that protects the Conservatory and the teacher from unfavorable questions and comments.

Contractual Agreements

All instructors in the Conservatory will be presented with a contract listing all requirements and expectations placed upon the instructor. The Contract will include the salary to be paid to the instructor for the contract period as well as details concerning the termination of the contract by either the instructor or the Conservatory. All instructors will be required to sign and abide by a Doctrinal Statement of Faith in addition to their contract. Both documents must be completed and signed before any lesson can be taught in the Conservatory. Instructors under contract with the Second Baptist Church Conservatory of Music will be requested to teach exclusively for the Conservatory. No instructor shall teach privately or for any other institution without prior approval from the Conservatory Administrator. Instructors are also requested to agree NOT to solicit students from the Conservatory roll in the event of the instructor's resignation from the Conservatory.

Instructor's Children

To maintain as professional an environment as possible, instructors may NOT bring their children with them to lessons at the Conservatory of Music. It is impossible to give the Conservatory student undivided attention if the instructor is also having to monitor his own children. Keeping in mind that your employment here is like any other job, please make necessary OFF CAMPUS child-care arrangements for your children.

Student Fees and Attendance

When a student completes the registration process, he/she will be assigned to an instructor. The student may not begin classes until the Conservatory office notifies you that the registration process has been completed. Any lessons taught prior to this notification will not be paid to the instructor.

All attendance sheets are due following the last lesson for each month. They should be turned in to the Conservatory office where they will be verified against a roster of registered students. All of your lessons for the month will be totaled and the appropriate sheets turned in to the Financial Office for the processing of payment. Please make sure your attendance sheets are filled out accurately before turning them in. Due to accounting procedures, failure to submit your time sheet by the last day of the month may result in a forwarding of your payment to the next pay period (approximately 30 days).

Students withdrawing from the Conservatory of Music must notify the Conservatory Administrator of their intention to withdraw. The Administrator will then notify the instructor. Payment for students that drop in the middle of a semester will be as follows: You will be paid only for the remaining lessons in the month in which the student had his last lesson.

In the event that an instructor terminates his affiliation with the Conservatory of Music, his students will be assigned to another Conservatory instructor.

Holidays

Lessons occurring on single day holidays (i.e. Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veteran's Day, MLK Day, President's Day, etc.) should be taught as scheduled unless prior arrangements have been made between you and your student(s). Keys will be furnished to those instructors needing them to teach lessons when the office is closed.

Make-up Lessons

In the event that a student notifies the instructor or the Conservatory office advising as to illness, death in the family, or an unavoidable conflict that shall be deemed reasonable by the instructor and the Conservatory Administrator, every effort will be made to schedule a make-up lesson for the student. However, if a student misses a lesson without giving 24 hours notice, the instructor is NOT obliged to reschedule the lesson. In the event that the instructor has to be absent from lessons that he or she is scheduled to teach, it will be left up to the instructor to set up a day and time to make-up this lesson with the student. It is the student's responsibility to notify the instructor if a lesson is to be missed for any reason. If the instructor cannot be reached, the student should notify the Conservatory office. Failure to notify the instructor or the Conservatory office will result in no make-up lesson, and the student will not be refunded for the lesson that is missed. The Conservatory office and the instructors reserve the right to rule on whether a lesson is to be made up or not. Instructors are only required to make-up two (2) lessons per semester. After school work conflicts by the student will not be considered a reasonable conflict; therefore, no make-up lessons will be scheduled to cooperate with the student's work conflicts.

Payment of Instructors

Each instructor will be paid a fee based on experience, credentials, and/or formal training. This is detailed in the instructor contract. Checks will be distributed on or before the fifteenth day of each month. Payment will be for the preceding month. Checks can be picked up in the Conservatory office. Items that may delay payments include but are not limited to: 1) students appearing on the attendance sheets that are not properly registered, 2) if a student drops and the Conservatory office is not notified of the drop. No instructor fees will be paid for students that are considered delinquent.
